## Market Bounce Fades After Huge Crash
South Korea’s stock market (KOSPI) started strong on Wednesday, June 24, trying to recover from a massive 10% crash the day before. However, the comeback quickly failed. While Samsung managed to stay slightly up, its rival SK Hynix fell into the negative, pulling the overall index back down toward the 8,300 level.
Although local retail and institutional investors rushed in early to buy discounted stocks, foreign investors kept selling. Traders are also nervous and unwilling to hold big positions ahead of U.S. chipmaker Micron Technology’s upcoming earnings report.
## A Quick Peek at the Numbers
* **The Index:** The KOSPI jumped over 4% early in the day to peak at 8,543.68, but later dropped back to 8,297—leaving it with just a 1% gain.
* **Samsung Electronics:** Rose 7% early on but trimmed those gains to trade around 322,500 won.
* **SK Hynix:** Erased an early surge to 2,653,000 won and flipped into losses, dropping to 2,467,000 won.
* **KOSDAQ:** The smaller tech index followed a similar path, giving up most of its morning gains.
## Why the Recovery Stalled
Tuesday was a historic disaster for the market. The KOSPI plummeted 910.71 points (9.99%) from its record high of 9,114.55 to close at 8,203.84. Samsung and SK Hynix both plummeted around 12%, forcing regulators to temporarily halt trading for 20 minutes.
