Blown accounts… I doubt there’s a single profitable trader who didn’t first experience the market humbling them by wiping out a large portion of their capital. But here’s the reality: as a trader, it should actually be impossible to completely “blow” your account and lose 100%.
That’s exactly why this topic matters more than any form of analysis — and honestly, it’s probably something that should be taught first. Especially for beginners… always remember the core truth about the markets. As Mark Douglas explains in Trading in the Zone (a must-read): “Every moment in the market is unique.” No matter how skilled you are at analysis, there will always be a chance that your trade idea is wrong. Because of that, risk on every trade must be managed and calculated properly.
Otherwise, you’re not really trading — you’re gambling. And gamblers eventually lose everything the market can take from them.
This is where risk-to-reward becomes so important. We already know that managing risk per trade is essential for consistency — but the question is, how much should you risk? Before anything else, always think in percentages rather than dollar amounts. Focus on the % relative to your account balance, not the money itself.
Here’s a simple example. Imagine you have a $1000 account and choose to risk 3% per trade, which equals $30. You take a setup with a 30 pip stop loss and a 90 pip target (a 1:3 RR trade). To keep your risk controlled, you would use a 0.1 lot size. Since every 10 pips equals $10, a 30 pip stop loss means you risk exactly $30. If the trade wins, you make $90.
Now another example. You have a $100 account and still risk only 3%, meaning $3. This time your stop loss is very tight — only 3 pips — so you can use a 1 lot position size while still risking just 3%. If that trade runs for 90 pips, the profit becomes $900. That’s the true power of risk-to-reward.
A lot of traders understand the concept, but many still fail to realize that the percentage risk should stay fixed on every trade. It doesn’t matter whether your stop loss is 3 pips or 30 pips — the % risk should remain the same. Once you start applying this properly and combine it with high RR setups, the growth potential on your account becomes massive.
