Apostle & Martyr
A Levite from Cyprus named Joseph, he sold his property and laid the money at the apostles’ feet, earning the name Barnabas (“Son of Encouragement”) for his generous and uplifting spirit. He vouched for the newly converted Saul (Paul) before the apostles and became his companion on the first missionary journey. Together they preached the Gospel to Gentiles, participated in the Council of Jerusalem, and strengthened the early Church. Tradition holds that Barnabas later evangelized Cyprus, where he was martyred around 61 AD.
“Barnabas… was a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and of faith.” (Acts 11:24)
A true “son of encouragement” who bridged communities and supported great missionaries — teaching us the power of generosity, reconciliation, and bold faith in building up the Body of Christ.
Lord Jesus, through the intercession of St. Barnabas, grant us hearts full of encouragement, generosity in sharing our resources, and courage to proclaim the Gospel alongside others.
