The protocol can’t function without RUNE. Each liquidity pool is paired with RUNE, nodes bind RUNE to secure the network, and all the yield is distributed in RUNE.
The value of RUNE is backed by the network's liquidity, with all assets in the liquidity pools paired 1:1 with RUNE in dollar value.
Nodes secure the liquidity pools and the application layer. RUNE must be staked to a node to enter the network. If nodes steal cryptocurrencies, their bonds will be slashed, causing those nodes to lose value. More staked RUNE means more economic security.
You don’t need to hold RUNE to swap on THORChain. The swap fees are deducted from the asset being sold and used to buy RUNE. This creates buying pressure on RUNE and forms the yield allocated throughout the network.
