In the cryptocurrency world, I've seen two types of people: one type understands everything, from Bitcoin to the most obscure altcoins, from technical analysis to macroeconomics, from project development to community management; they can talk about it all. The other type knows just a little bit, maybe just Bitcoin, or just Ethereum, and has little understanding of the rest.
Interestingly, the ones who make money are often the second type.
I used to be the first type of person. I felt I had to understand the entire market and seize every opportunity. I studied 20 different tracks, tracked 100 projects, and the information I read daily could fill a book. What was the result? Scattered focus, shallow understanding, and chaotic operations.
Until I realized: in the crypto world, being one centimeter wide and one kilometer deep is more valuable than being one kilometer wide and one centimeter deep.
Chapter 1: The Power of Focus.
Focus makes you an expert.
I decided to focus on Bitcoin. Not because I think it’s the best, but because I believe: if I can only understand one coin, it should be Bitcoin.
I did three things:
Read the Bitcoin white paper 10 times.
Read all important papers about Bitcoin.
Join the Bitcoin core developers' mailing list.
Three months later, I found that my understanding of Bitcoin exceeded 99% of 'crypto people'. I know its technical principles, its development history, its community culture, and its strengths and weaknesses.
This focus brings three benefits:
Better judgment: When market rumors about Bitcoin arise, I can immediately judge their truth.
Stronger determination: When Bitcoin crashes, I know why it fell and whether I should be afraid.
Higher returns: Because of my focus, I can seize every major wave of Bitcoin.
Focus helps you avoid temptation.
The biggest characteristic of the crypto world is that there are too many opportunities (temptations). New projects every day, new concepts every day, and 'hundredfold opportunities' every day.
After I focused on Bitcoin, I became immune to these temptations:
New public chain? Don't understand, don't invest.
New trend? Don't understand, don't follow.
New play? Don't understand, don't play.
Many people mock me for being 'old' and 'conservative', but my account is steadily growing while theirs fluctuate wildly.
Focus enables you to form compounding returns.
The compounding of knowledge is stronger than the compounding of money. As my understanding of Bitcoin deepens, my judgment becomes more accurate, my operations become more stable, and my returns increase.
Moreover, this focus is transferable. After I established a complete investment framework through Bitcoin, my efficiency in studying Ethereum increased tenfold. Because the underlying logic is interconnected.
Chapter 2: How to Achieve Focus.
Focus is not innate; it's trained. My focus training method:
Step 1: Define the boundaries.
I set clear boundaries for myself:
Only invest in the top 20 coins by market cap.
Only invest in coins with real utility.
Only invest in coins I can understand.
Beyond the boundaries are others' opportunities, not mine. Accepting this brings liberation.
Step 2: Establish depth.
Within the boundaries, achieve extreme depth:
Bitcoin: Read an in-depth report every week.
Ethereum: Attend a developer meeting once a month.
Other coins: Conduct in-depth research on one every quarter.
Do not pursue breadth, pursue depth. A deep understanding of three coins is more valuable than a shallow understanding of thirty coins.
Step 3: Regular Review.
Monthly review of my focus:
Have you followed trends?
Have you been tempted?
Have you maintained depth?
If there are deviations, correct them promptly.
Chapter 3: Practical Cases of Focus.
Let me illustrate the value of focus with practical examples.
Case 1: Summer of DeFi 2020.
In the summer of 2020, DeFi exploded. Tokens like Uniswap, Compound, and Aave surged multiple times in just a few days. Everyone went crazy, asking everywhere 'Which DeFi coin should I buy?'
My approach:
Admit I don't understand DeFi.
Focus on my circle of competence (Bitcoin).
Continue holding Bitcoin.
Result:
Those chasing DeFi: Most bought at high points and later fell by 80%.
Me: Bitcoin rose from 9000 to 60000, a return of 567%.
Case 2: NFT frenzy in 2021.
In 2021, NFTs were explosive. Bored Apes and CryptoPunks sold for astronomical prices. Communities were discussing which NFT to buy.
My approach:
Admit I don't understand NFTs.
Focus on my circle of competence.
Continue holding Bitcoin and Ethereum.
Result:
Those chasing NFTs: Most of the NFTs they bought now have dried up in liquidity.
Me: Ethereum rose from 2000 to 4800, a return of 140%.
Case 3: The Layer 2 War of 2023.
In 2023, Layer 2 competition is fierce. Arbitrum, Optimism, zkSync, each has 'thousandfold potential'.
My approach:
Admit I don't understand the technical details of Layer 2.
But understand the value of Layer 2 for Ethereum.
Focus on holding Ethereum.
Result:
Those pursuing Layer 2: Most of them are buried.
Me: Ethereum performs relatively steadily during bear markets.
In the crypto world, opportunities are always more abundant than money. You don't need to seize every opportunity, just the ones that belong to you. And the opportunities that belong to you are definitely within your circle of competence.
Focus is not a limitation, but a liberation. It frees you from the anxiety of wanting to grasp 'everything', it frees you from the fear of 'missing out', and it frees you from the exhaustion of 'buying high and selling low'.
My life is simple now: hold Bitcoin and Ethereum, occasionally play with promising Layer 2s in small positions. I spend very little time monitoring the market, most of my time is spent living, learning, and thinking. But my returns are better and more stable than those who study for 20 hours a day and track 100 projects.
