Today META brought the whole arena down—let’s talk about the Meta compute rental event

Meta invested several hundred billion USD to build data centers and buy GPUs, but its in-house models have never been able to catch up with the top tier. Its compute capacity goes unused, so it decided to rent it out to monetize. xAI did something similar before as well.

In the short term, this is a negative for the AI hardware sector.

There are a few reasons:
1. The market’s original narrative was “compute is always not enough.” Now the biggest buyer is starting to act as a seller—faith is shaken.
2. Samsung and Hynix are also announcing expansion plans at the same time, so expectations for supply are increasing.
3. For stock prices, “slowing growth” is more damaging than “demand disappearing,” because valuations are priced based on growth.

But I think this isn’t simply about “compute being oversupplied.”

Meta’s reason for renting out compute isn’t that it bought too much—it can’t use it well. If its model were strong enough, it would basically be unable to get enough compute in the first place.
