Flights to Bahrain, Iraq, Iran, Jordan, Kuwait, Oman, Syria, and Qatar have been halted. British Airways operations have also been affected. For the first time, the world is witnessing such a situation.
Dubai is not just an airport; it is a global transit hub where flights traveling from Mumbai to London, Singapore to Frankfurt, and Nairobi to New York routinely stop.
Flights passing through Middle Eastern airspace are now canceled, delayed, or forced to travel thousands of extra miles. IndiGo has suspended flights to Almaty and has also halted services to Baku, Tashkent, and Tbilisi until March 28.
Oil prices have surged to $100 per barrel, and airlines are in a state of severe panic, facing a crisis for which they have no clear solution. Not only has flight duration become a major challenge, but there is also the looming threat of the Strait of Hormuz being closed, through which 21 million barrels of oil are transported daily to industrial nations.
There is another aspect that is not yet being widely discussed. The UAE’s economy heavily depends on air connectivity. Not only trade but tourism will also suffer a devastating blow. The country’s economic strength was built on being perceived as a safe destination, but now fear and uncertainty dominate.
The Iranian attacks were not only directed at American bases; they have shaken every economy in the Middle East. People in the UAE may not forget these wounds, while Iran may argue that it had no other choice, questioning why American bases were allowed there.
