🚨 Waltio Data Breach: Shiny Hunters Hacker Group Attacks Crypto Tax Service Provider
The French cryptocurrency tax calculation service platform Waltio has been ransomed. The hacker group Shiny Hunters claims to have gained access to the data of 50,000 users (one-third of the platform's total customers).
Incident summary:
On January 21, 2026, the attackers stole the 2024 tax reports. The information in the hackers' possession includes:
Email addresses; profit and loss data; year-end asset balances.
🛡 Information that is safe:
Company CEO Pierre Morizot quickly reassured users: the infrastructure has not been compromised. Passwords, exchange API keys, wallet addresses, and transaction histories have not been leaked. Waltio cannot directly access or move user funds, so your assets are safe.
⚠️ Main risk - Social engineering attacks:
The current main risk is not a system collapse, but phishing. Hackers may use the leaked report data to impersonate Waltio support personnel in an attempt to trick you into providing access to your exchange or wallet.
How to protect yourself?
Verify the sender: Use Waltio's internal security code to verify the authenticity of emails. Ignore phone/SMS: The company does not have customers' phone numbers. Any call claiming to be from a "Waltio employee" is a scam. Stay vigilant: If a "support person" asks you for your password or recovery phrase and claims it's related to this breach, it is definitely a trap.
Please stay vigilant and protect your assets!🔒
