Here’s what we do know — and what remains uncertain 👇 ✅ What is true / widely reported Vitalik recently warned that quantum computers could pose a real threat to Ethereum (and cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin) by 2028. The risk stems from the underlying cryptography: Ethereum (and many blockchains) uses elliptic-curve cryptography (ECC) / ECDSA to secure wallets and signatures. Quantum computers running a powerful algorithm (like Shor's algorithm) could — in theory — break ECC, derive private keys from public keys, and compromise security. Buterin doesn’t say quantum computers have already broken Ethereum — rather he frames it as a risk: he estimates there’s a non-negligible chance ("~20%") that quantum-capable machines able to break modern cryptography could appear by 2030. ⚠️ What to keep in mind — it’s not a done deal As of now, quantum computers powerful enough to break ECC at scale do not exist.
