August 21 | #United States ordered the deployment of an amphibious squadron to the south of the Caribbean, as part of President Donald Trump's strategy to confront the threats from Latin American cartels.
The ships USS San Antonio, USS Iwo Jima, and USS Fort Lauderdale could arrive next Sunday at the shores of #Venezuela, two sources informed about the deployment told Reuters on Wednesday.
The vessels carry 4,500 military personnel, including 2,200 Marines. Although the sources refrained from specifying the exact mission, they indicated that the objective of the deployment is related to the fight against narcoterrorist organizations in the region.
In February, the White House included the Sinaloa Cartel and other Mexican drug trafficking gangs in its list of global terrorist organizations, as well as the Venezuelan criminal group Tren de Aragua. A few weeks ago, the designation of the Cartel of the Suns was also announced, a group that the U.S. claims is allegedly led by Nicolás Maduro.
