Today the calendar has once again formed a combination that makes many people nervously look around. Paraskevidekatriaphobia — this is the official term for the fear of Friday the 13th. But where does this date get such a powerful 'anti-publicity'?

1. The Collapse of the First 'Financial Empire' (1307)

The most popular historical version leads us to the dawn of October 13, 1307. French King Philip IV the Fair decided to get rid of his debts to the Knights Templar in one fell swoop. That Friday, thousands of knights were arrested across the country. The order was destroyed, and the legend of 'cursed Friday' was solidified through the ages.

2. Numbering error in Valhalla

In Scandinavian mythology, there is a legend of a feast with 12 gods in Valhalla. The 13th guest — the treacherous Loki — showed up uninvited. As a result of a scuffle, the beloved of the gods, bright Baldur, perished. Since then, 13 is considered a number that disrupts harmony and brings discord.

3. Christian influence

Here everything converges to one point: 13 participants of the Last Supper (the thirteenth — Judas) and Good Friday — the day of crucifixion. This double combo made the combination of the day and number a symbol of betrayal and sorrow in Western culture.

4. Triskaidekaphobia in numbers and business

The fear of the number 13 is so real that it directly affects the economy:

  • In many hotels around the world, the 13th floor 'disappears' (after the 12th, there is immediately the 14th).

  • In airports, there is often no 13th boarding gate.

  • On some airlines, you won't find a 13th row in airplanes.

  • According to statistics, only in the USA, the economy loses up to $900 million every Friday the 13th because people are afraid to fly, make large purchases, or enter into deals.

  • What is it really?

From a mathematical point of view — it's just a date that occurs at least once, and at most three times a year. Psychologists call it 'confirmation bias': if something unpleasant happens on this day, we blame the date. If something good happens — we just forget about it.
