The UK government is refraining from granting the U.S. permission to use the Diego Garcia military base in the Chagos Islands for a possible strike on Iran, Bloomberg reports, citing informed sources.
This decision was made against the backdrop of U.S. President Donald Trump concentrating military forces in the Middle East while simultaneously increasing pressure on Tehran during ongoing negotiations regarding its nuclear program. On Wednesday, Trump stated that the Diego Garcia base in the Indian Ocean and an airfield in England could play a key role in any hypothetical U.S. attack on Iran.
Sources told Bloomberg on Thursday that the UK did not grant permission to use these bases for such a strike due to concerns regarding international law and other considerations. Diego Garcia was not used during the US strikes on Iran in June.

Trump and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer had a phone conversation on Tuesday, discussing negotiations between Iran and the USA taking place in Geneva. The message regarding their conversation did not specify whether Trump requested the use of British bases.
In connection with this, Trump stated on Wednesday that the UK is making a 'big mistake' with its proposed deal to transfer control of the Chagos Islands to Mauritius. This statement contradicted his position from two weeks ago when he called the agreement the 'best' option that Starmer could have reached, and it came just a day after the US State Department approved the deal.
