President Trump stated that he wants to participate in the process of selecting the new Supreme Leader of Iran and expressed dissatisfaction with the most mentioned candidate, Mojtaba Khamenei – the son of the former leader.
Trump believes that if Iran continues to choose a leader with a hardline stance, the U.S. may have to return to confrontation in the coming years.
However, in reality, the Supreme Leader of Iran must be elected by the Assembly of Experts, which consists of 88 members, so U.S. intervention in this process is nearly impossible.
