Most blockchain, gas fee feels like some random tax. you click send, some coin vanish, and if price pumps, basic stuff gets crazy expensiv. midnight network tries to fix this using two things, NIGHT and DUST. together they change gas from “burn your main token” into something more like a rechargeble plan that comes from what you already hold.
NIGHT is the main public token. everyone can see transfers, balances, rewards, all on chain. but here is the twist: you dont actualy spend NIGHT for gas. instead, when you hold NIGHT, your account automaticly generates DUST over time. DUST is the real fuel that pays transaction fee and runs private smart contracts. so NIGHT is like owning the generator, and DUST is the power it keeps making.
this makes gas feel less painful. your NIGHT stack can stay mostly intact as long term asset, while your DUST goes up and down as you use the network. if you stop using it for a while, DUST slowly refills. if you go hard, you might run low and need to wait or add more NIGHT. but you are not constantly selling off your core token just to click buttons.
DUST is very diffrent from normal tokens. it is shielded, so how you use it inside private contract doesn’t show up in clear text for everyone. it is also non transferable, meaning you cant send it as money or trade it on market. its only job is paying for network operations. because of that, there is no point trying to hoard DUST for speculation. it even decays if you don’t use it, nudging people toward real activity instead of pure holding games.
for devs and companies, this setup makes cost way more predictible. they can say, “we hold this much NIGHT, so we generate about this much DUST per day,” and compare that with how many user actions they expect. if they need more capacity, they increase their NIGHT position. if the app slows down, unused DUST just fades and nothing breaks. gas stops being a wild external price risk and becomes an internal resource stream they can plan around.
another nice trick is that DUST use can be delegated. you can’t send DUST like cash, but a dapp can use DUST from its own pool, or from supporters, to pay user fees under the hood. from the user side, the network starts to feel “free,” more like normal web app where nobody pays per click. that smooth flow is super important if you want everyday people to touch privacy smart contracts without fear.
splitting roles between NIGHT and DUST also helps governance. on many chain, the token you spend on gas is the same one you need for voting. heavy users lose voting power as they interact. on midnight, you burn DUST, but keep your NIGHT, so your voice in protocol decisions doesn’t shrink just because you use the chain a lot.
in short, NIGHT and DUST redefine gas by separating long term ownership from short term usage. NIGHT is the visible backbone that secures and governs the network. DUST is the private, temporary fuel it emits, used only for real computation. that simple shift turns gas from a constant drain into a manageable, renewable resource that better matches how people and apps actually want to use a privacy first blockchain.
