The Chinese company Geely Automobile Holdings Ltd. is preparing to enter the Canadian market after the country earlier this year reached an agreement that opened access for electric vehicles from China.
The automaker is awaiting certification from Canadian authorities for vehicles under the Geely Auto brand, said Andy An, CEO of the parent company Zhejiang Geely Holding Group Co.

"We are considering not only the Canadian market but also Brazil, South America, Eastern Europe, and Southeast Asia," said An. "Geely's globalization is currently mainly carried out through exports, but we will strive for localization of production."
This step followed after Prime Minister Mark Carney's government created a mechanism for Chinese cars and investments to support Canada's manufacturing sector. In January, Canada agreed to exempt 100% of the tariffs imposed in 2024 on up to 49,000 Chinese-made electric vehicles each year. Ottawa is seeking investments from Chinese automakers through joint ventures with Canadian companies.

Other Chinese automakers have begun exploring opportunities in Canada. BYD Co. stated that it is actively considering the possibility of building a factory in the country. Chery Automobile Co. Ltd., the largest Chinese exporter of cars, has started hiring staff in Canada to establish operations there, the Globe and Mail reported in January.
