He also indicated that the vessel was carrying 'crude oil from Russia'. According to Uraloglu, the vessel was sailing under a foreign flag but is operated by a Turkish company. Shortly after midnight, Turkish rescuers received an emergency call regarding an explosion in the engine room of the tanker, which became the target of the strike, he reported. The circumstances indicate that the attackers intended to 'completely incapacitate it'.
Emergency services have been dispatched to the incident site, the situation is under control, Uraloglu stated further. He did not clarify whether it was a tanker flying the flag of Sierra Leone, as previously reported by local media. According to them, at the time of the attack, the vessel was in Turkish territorial waters less than 30 km from the Bosphorus Strait.

Several similar attacks occurred in the Black Sea in December and January. After that, the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the ambassadors of Russia and Ukraine, and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan urged not to make the Black Sea a 'conflict zone' between the warring parties.
