Iran is now accepting crypto payments from oil tankers passing through the Strait of Hormuz during the US ceasefire. The move aims to monitor cargo and prevent weapon transfers, while also helping Tehran bypass sanctions.

Industry official Hamid Hosseini said fully loaded vessels must pay $1 per barrel in crypto—likely Bitcoin—after reporting cargo details by email. Empty tankers get a free pass, but laden ships must settle the toll in digital assets before being cleared.

This is a major real-world use case for crypto in global trade and sanctions evasion. It could push more countries to adopt digital assets for cross-border payments, while raising risks for Western shipping firms navigating Iranian waters.
