Intel Corp. hired Samsung Electronics Co. executive Shawn Han to attract customers to its custom chip manufacturing business.
Han, executive vice president of Samsung, will join Intel next month as general manager of the foundry services division and will report to Naga Chandrasekaran, head of the chip maker's foundry division, according to a statement on Thursday.
This move is part of Intel's recovery plan under CEO Lip-Bu Tan, aimed at expanding the company's foundry business, which produces chips for external clients. The foundry market is currently dominated by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., with Samsung trailing in a distant second.
Intel is looking to convince other chip manufacturers, many of whom are competitors, to become their foundry partner.
"This hire reflects Intel Foundry's ongoing emphasis on close collaboration with clients and customer-centric execution," said Chandrasekaran. "Shawn brings over 10 years of commercial leadership experience in foundry from his time at Samsung Foundry."
