Emergency Response NHK has halted all regular broadcasts, presenters continue to shout: "Your life is a priority, flee to higher ground immediately!". PM Sanae Takaichi urges citizens to evacuate to higher ground or evacuation buildings. The government is also evacuating workers from the Fukushima nuclear power plant — but no anomalies have been detected at any nuclear reactor. Tokyo–Aomori Shinkansen services have been suspended due to power outages from the earthquake. An M 7.4 earthquake occurred at 4:53 PM Japan time in the Pacific Ocean, off the northern coast of Iwate Prefecture.

The depth of the hypocenter is only 10 km — classified as a shallow earthquake, which is why the shaking felt very strong.

Mechanism: thrust fault, due to the subduction of the Pacific Plate with the Okhotsk Plate.

The epicenter is located 71 km from Miyako City, Iwate Prefecture (USGS version)
