U.S. President Donald Trump extended the ceasefire with Iran, which was set to expire on the evening of Wednesday, April 22. Trump explained his decision by stating that the government in Tehran is "seriously divided," he wrote on the social media platform Truth Social. The president did not specify a new deadline.
"We were asked to refrain from attacking Iran until its leaders and representatives can formulate a unified proposal [for resolving the conflict]," Trump said in a post. "Therefore, I have instructed our armed forces to continue the blockade and to remain fully prepared and combat-ready in all other respects, as well as to extend the ceasefire until the proposal is presented and negotiations are concluded — one way or another."
Following this announcement, the price of Brent crude, which spiked to $100 per barrel due to reports of the peace talks breaking down, has once again dipped below that mark, trading at $98.9. The daily gain was around 3.5%.
Iran notified the US through an intermediary — Pakistan — on Tuesday that it will not participate in the negotiations that were supposed to take place on Wednesday in Islamabad, according to semi-official Iranian agency Tasnim, as reported by Bloomberg. At the same time, there was information from sources across several media outlets that Vice President JD Vance's trip to the negotiations has been postponed.
