Finland is taking measures to safeguard the Baltic coast against potential oil spills from the Russian "shadow fleet" tankers. Metal rings are being installed on the rocks around the Finnish islands, which will deploy as protective barriers against oil pollution in the event of a spill, reported on Wednesday, April 22, from Helsinki by the John Nurminen Foundation, dedicated to the protection of the Baltic Sea.
According to the fund, such rings will be established as a precautionary measure in the islands in the eastern part of the Gulf of Finland on a permanent basis. This will allow for the rapid deployment of boom barriers if needed, effectively localizing an oil spill and preventing further spread to the coast.
The pre-installed rings can 'significantly accelerate' the implementation of protective measures in case of an accident, explained Jukka Pekka Lumilati, head of the operational department of the Finnish Coast Guard in the Gulf of Finland.
High risk of accidents and oil spills in the Baltic
Authorities in Finland, along with Germany and other countries, have repeatedly warned of the threat of serious environmental damage from a potential accident involving one of the tankers from the Russian 'shadow fleet' in the Baltic Sea. According to Helsinki, an accident involving a 'shadow fleet' tanker could lead to the spillage of thousands of tons of crude oil into the sea. Given the frequent disruptions in GPS navigation in the Baltic Sea, collisions with other vessels cannot be ruled out.

The John Nurminen Foundation also states that the risk of oil spills in the Baltic Sea has significantly increased due to attacks by Ukrainian drones on Russian oil ports Primorsk and Ust-Luga, located in the eastern part of the Gulf of Finland.
