US President Donald Trump and members of his administration were evacuated from the annual White House Correspondents' Dinner, held on Saturday, April 25, at the Washington Hilton due to a 'security threat,' local news agencies report. According to the media, this involves a man who opened fire in the hotel.
The Secret Service and other US security agencies surrounded the banquet hall of the hotel, where over a hundred people were waiting for Trump’s speech, according to the Associated Press. Some attendees reported hearing, in their opinion, between five to eight shots. The shooter did not enter the hall; the incident occurred in one of the other hotel rooms.
Among those present at the event, besides Trump, were First Lady Melania Trump, US Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegset, and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. They, along with later invited journalists, were evacuated, and security measures at the hotel were tightened.
There are no reports on the injured as a result of the incident.
Trump: Shooter apprehended
Later, the White House press pool reported that the Secret Service apprehended the alleged shooter. The apprehension of the man was confirmed by the US President in a post on the social network Truth Social.
"It was a packed evening in Washington, D.C. The Secret Service and law enforcement did a fantastic job. They acted swiftly and courageously. The shooter has been apprehended, and I've recommended to 'keep the show going,' but I will fully follow the recommendations of law enforcement," wrote the US President.
According to Trump, the meeting with journalists has been postponed due to the incident.
