Previously, Novak, who had a criminal record in Russia for fraud, fled abroad, reportedly stealing hundreds of millions of dollars from investors. He promoted a fake crypto application (Fintopio) and invented non-existent connections with major IT companies and even with Telegram founder Pavel Durov to attract victims.

According to investigators, the couple was kidnapped in the UAE in early October with the aim of extorting access to their crypto wallets.
When the kidnappers failed to obtain funds, the spouses were killed.
The organizers of the crime (citizens of Russia) have already been arrested in St. Petersburg.
