Vitalik posted on social media platform X this Tuesday, sharing the community's positive response to the recent Gas limit adjustments, and revealed the next phase of the scalability roadmap. He expects that with the optimization of Gas prices for certain types of operations, the effective throughput of the Ethereum network could achieve five times the current level in the future, significantly improving before 2025.

Vitalik stated: "Next year, we are likely to raise the Gas limit again, but we will implement compensatory measures simultaneously." These adjustments aim to make high resource-consuming operations more accurately reflect their actual costs while reducing unnecessary resource waste.

What will become more expensive? Vitalik pointed out four categories.

To avoid abuse caused by raising the gas limit, Vitalik specifically noted that four types of operations may face price increases in 2026:

  • SSTORE (Storage Slot): especially operations when creating new storage slots;

  • Precompiles (Precompiled Contracts): covering early cryptographic function calls;

  • Calldata: the cost per byte for transmitting data will slightly increase;

  • Complex arithmetic operations (such as MODMUL): the network resource costs will be reassessed.

These fine adjustments are expected to curb inefficient contract behavior while maintaining the continuous growth of the overall transaction capacity of the network.

The next upgrade is temporarily named 'Glamsterdam', continuing the spirit of decentralization.

Related changes will be integrated into the next network upgrade, and the development team is temporarily using 'Glamsterdam' as a code name. This name combines two major developer events in recent years—the Devcon in Glasgow and the Devconnect in Amsterdam, echoing the global collaborative spirit of the Ethereum community.

On this first layer (Layer 1) design road known as the 'Eternal Challenge', $ETH we continue to explore how to balance performance, decentralization, and security. The fine-tuning of the gas mechanism is a key step in achieving this goal.
