Trump Signs Executive Order to Establish Unified Federal Regulations for AI

US President Trump signed an executive order regarding artificial intelligence on Thursday, which aims to replace the increasing number of state laws governing AI technology with national standards.

"We want to have a core source of approval," Trump told reporters, accompanied by senior advisors including Treasury Secretary Scott Gottlieb.

White House AI advisor David Sachs stated that the order will provide the Trump administration with tools to overturn the most "burdensome" state regulations. He added that the government would not oppose regulations concerning artificial intelligence and child safety.

Major AI players, including OpenAI, Google, Meta, and venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz, have all indicated that regulation of the industry should come from the federal government, not the states.

However, bipartisan leaders in various US states have expressed that they need the authority to set guardrails around AI, especially given Congress's failure to pass laws regulating the tech industry.

Florida Governor and Republican Ron DeSantis proposed an AI bill of rights that includes data privacy, parental controls, and consumer protection. California Governor Gavin Newsom signed a bill this year requiring major AI developers to explain their plans for mitigating potential catastrophic risks. California is home to several large AI companies.

Other states have already passed laws banning non-consensual sexual images generated by AI and unauthorized political deepfakes.
