🚨 Trump’s $100,000 H-1B visa fee draws legal challenge from US states

California and 19 other U.S. states have filed a lawsuit to block President Trump’s newly announced $100,000 fee on new H-1B visas, calling it unlawful and unconstitutional.

The fee, unveiled in September, massively increases the cost of hiring skilled foreign workers — up from the usual $2,000–$5,000 range. California Attorney General Rob Bonta argues Trump lacks the authority to impose it, saying federal law only allows fees that cover administrative costs, not revenue generation.

The H-1B program is critical for industries like technology, healthcare, and education, especially in states such as California. Critics warn the fee would worsen labor shortages and force service cuts, while supporters of the policy argue it will prevent abuse of the visa system and protect American workers.

The White House maintains the fee is legal and within presidential authority. Multiple lawsuits are now underway, including one from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, with a court hearing scheduled next week.

This legal battle could have major implications for U.S. labor markets, immigration policy, and the tech sector going forward.
