The USA and Iran have agreed to set up a communication channel to prevent incidents in the Hormuz Strait. This was reported on Monday, June 22, by Qatar's Foreign Ministry on social media X - the mediator in the talks in Switzerland, the latest round of which has concluded.
"For the period specified in paragraph 5 of the Memorandum of Understanding, a communication line has been established between the parties to prevent incidents and misunderstandings, aimed at ensuring the safe passage of trade vessels through the Hormuz Strait," the statement from the ministry said.
According to him, the high-level committee created to oversee the mediation process has agreed on a "roadmap" to reach a final agreement within 60 days, laying the groundwork for immediate further technical negotiations.
A resolution group is being formed
Additionally, the parties agreed to form a resolution group consisting of representatives from Iran, the US, and Lebanon with the help of mediators. The goal is to create conditions for ending military operations in Lebanon according to the Memorandum. "Technical talks on all issues will continue until the end of the week" at the Bürgenstock resort in the Swiss Alps, near Lucerne, stated the Qatari Foreign Ministry.
Qatar and Pakistan expressed sincere gratitude to Washington and Tehran for their unwavering commitment to diplomacy and peaceful resolution of the conflict. Mediators also highly appreciate the efforts of friendly countries - for their support and valuable contribution to the negotiations.
"Encouraging progress has been achieved"
"The summit at Lake Lucerne was held in a positive and constructive atmosphere. Encouraging progress has been achieved," stated the Qatari Foreign Ministry.
The chief negotiators will regularly report to a high-level committee and lead working groups dealing with nuclear issues, sanctions, as well as monitoring and dispute resolution, in order to ensure effective implementation of the Memorandum.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi called the agreements reached on social media X a "great success" on the path to ending hostilities in Lebanon.
The Hormuz Strait is closed
Before the talks, Tehran announced the reclosure of the Hormuz Strait due to the ongoing military operation by Israel in Lebanon. The Joint Command of the Armed Forces of Iran stated on June 20 that the strait was closed due to "a clear violation of obligations" by the US, which has not ceased its aggression.
On June 15, US President Donald Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian signed a framework agreement extending the ceasefire declared in April and providing, among other things, for the opening of the blocked Hormuz Strait. A deadline of 60 days was set for subsequent negotiations.
