🔥The Ethereum consensus layer client Prysm team has released a post-mortem report on the December 4th Fusaka mainnet failure. The failure was caused by almost all Prysm nodes exhausting resources when processing specific proofs, and the root cause was the high-cost state recomputation of out-of-sync proofs by the Prysm beacon node.
The incident resulted in 41 missed epochs, network participation dropping to 75%, and validators losing approximately 382.00 ETH in rewards. The team first temporarily resolved the issue with the --disable-last-epoch-target flag, and then fundamentally changed the proof verification logic in versions v7.0.1 and v7.1.0 to fix it.
This incident exposed the team's shortcomings in communication and testing, but also highlighted the critical role of Ethereum client diversity in avoiding the risk of more serious finality loss.$ETH
