The export of domestic drones has surged dramatically, and the presence of K-drones in the global market is increasingly strong. According to statistics from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, the cumulative drone export amount from January to November this year reached 36.8 billion won, a 58% increase compared to the same period last year.
This performance growth is not merely a one-time sale, but rather the result of a comprehensive export of various models, technical services, and components. Among all export categories, complete drones account for the highest proportion at 84%, followed by drone-related services at 13%, components at 2%, and software at 1%. Analysis points out that as the product line diversifies from vertical take-off and landing aircraft to various task models and drones for inspection and filming, the attention of actual demand countries continues to increase.
It is particularly noteworthy that this year, the number of countries exporting drones from South Korea has increased to 30, more than doubling from 13 last year. In terms of value, the United Arab Emirates, the United States, and Uzbekistan rank as the top three exporters. The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport stated that this export not only covers developed countries such as North America and Europe but also makes significant inroads into emerging markets in Asia and Africa, which is of great importance.
The background for this expansion in exports lies in international cooperation and the promotion of local demonstration projects. This year, the Ministry of Land signed 59 business agreements with 29 countries and promoted 20 demonstration projects in various countries. At the same time, technical exchanges are being conducted in parallel through drone roadshows in the United States and Japan, and the establishment of a drone academy in Ghana. This has laid a solid foundation for domestic enterprises to enter overseas markets.
The government plans to continue promoting the overseas expansion of K-drones next year. Kim Young-guk, an aviation policy officer at the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, stated that they will officially showcase domestic drones, components, and services in strategic markets like the United States through the "Korea Drone Expo" and "Global Drone Cooperation Conference" planned for 2026, expressing a determination to further expand exports.
This trend indicates that the technological autonomy level and export competitiveness of the domestic drone industry are gradually entering a stable development stage. Particularly, if it can align with the demand for intelligent infrastructure in various countries around the globe, the K-drone is expected to grow into a new generation of export-oriented industries.
