The Canadian Prime Minister gave a speech at the World Economic Forum yesterday that will probably be remembered forever. The Canadian Prime Minister is perhaps the first Western leader to openly expose the contradictions between the West and the great powers.
A few excerpts from his historic speech
“We knew that the story of a world order based on international law was partly false… that the powerful could exempt themselves whenever they wanted… and that international law applied with varying degrees of severity depending on the identity of the accused or the victim.”
“This fiction worked and American hegemony in particular provided public benefits… that’s why we put that sign in the window… this deal no longer works.”
“Let me be clear, we are not in a period of transition but of rupture.”
“The great powers have weaponized economic integration. Tariffs for pressure. Financial structures for coercion. Supply chains have been turned into vulnerabilities that can be exploited.”
“You cannot live in the lie of mutual benefit when integration itself becomes a means of subjugation.”
“Those multilateral institutions… WTO, UN, COP… are in danger.”
“When rules don’t protect you, you have to protect yourself.”
“A fortified world will be poorer, more fragile, and less sustainable.”
“Hegemonic powers cannot always turn their relationships into profits. Allies will diversify to protect against uncertainty… The autonomy that was once based on rules will now be rooted in the ability to withstand pressure.”
