Plasma eventually faded into obscurity. It was plagued by the "Data Availability problem" and notoriously long withdrawal times (up to 7 days to move funds back to mainnet). The market moved on to Optimism and Arbitrum.

But crypto is cyclical, and so is its technology.

Recent discussions, spearheaded by Vitalik Buterin, suggest a Plasma revival. Why now? Because Plasma finally have the missing piece of the puzzle

Zero-Knowledge (ZK) Proofs.

By integrating ZK-SNARKs, modern Plasma can potentially solve the data withholding attacks that crippled its first iteration, significantly speeding up exit times and offering fees even lower than current Rollups.

My take after a decade in this space: Don't dismiss "old tech" when new tools become available. Plasma isn't going to replace Rollups tomorrow, but it is re-entering the arena as a serious contender for ultra-low-cost transactions.
