Walrus ensures long-term blob availability through deterministic epoch-based reconfiguration of storage nodes. Each epoch, the protocol re-assigns blob replicas across the network via a verifiable random function (VRF), preventing adversarial targeting. Critical to continuity is the overlap period: nodes from the previous epoch persist until new nodes successfully synchronize state and provide cryptographic proofs of storage. This graceful handoff, combined with a robust erasure coding scheme and slashing conditions for node non-compliance, guarantees data durability across epochs. The system's liveness and recoverability are maintained even as the underlying storage node set continuously rotates, securing perpetual accessibility without centralized trust.
