#dusk $DUSK Astronomical Perspective of Dusk
Astronomically, dusk occurs when the Sun dips below the horizon, but its light continues to illuminate the sky indirectly through scattering in the Earth’s atmosphere. The scattering of sunlight by atmospheric particles causes the soft gradation of colors that we associate with dusk. Depending on the Sun's angle below the horizon, dusk is categorized into three distinct phases:
Civil Dusk – This phase occurs when the Sun is between 0° and 6° below the horizon. During civil dusk, enough natural light remains to perform most outdoor activities without artificial illumination. This is also the time when the first stars begin to appear in the sky, and streetlights or lamps are often turned on to supplement the fading sunlight.
Nautical Dusk – Occurring when the Sun is between 6° and 12° below the horizon, nautical dusk is significant for sailors and navigators. During this time, the horizon at sea becomes difficult to discern, but the brighter stars are visible, which historically helped in celestial navigation.
