Walrus (WAL) is designed for the real web 3 that everyone is talking about. People love to say that web 3 is about ownership and decentralization, but the truth is that most applications still rely on centralized storage for the parts that really matter. The transaction is on-chain, but content like files, images, datasets, and dates is often on a traditional server. This means that the application can still be controlled, restricted, or disabled by a single provider. Walrus is designed to change that. WAL is the native token of the Walrus protocol that focuses on secure and private interactions based on blockchain while also enabling decentralized data storage while maintaining privacy. It operates on the Sui blockchain and uses blob storage to efficiently handle large unstructured files. It then applies erasure coding to shard those files across a decentralized network so that data remains retrievable even if parts of the system are offline. WAL also supports governance and storage, which is important because decentralized storage only works in the long term when incentives keep providers reliable. Walrus does not try to be flashy, but rather tries to make web 3 usable.
