The Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado stated this Sunday that she will be president of Venezuela when the time comes and when the conditions in the country allow for democratic elections.

I will be president when the time comes. But that doesn't matter. That should be decided in elections by the Venezuelan people,” declared the winner of the Nobel Peace Prize 2025 in an interview with CBS.

It is worth noting that Machado has not yet returned to Venezuela after the U.S. military operation that ended with the removal of Nicolás Maduro.

“They did not allow me to run in the last election, as we already mentioned, because Maduro was afraid to face me, and thought that Edmundo did not represent a threat, because nobody knew who he was,” she noted referring to Edmundo González Urrutia's 2024 electoral campaign against Maduro.

On the other hand, she maintained that she does not believe her life is in danger if she returns to Venezuela, thanks to the “pressure” that the United States exerts on the interim government led by Delcy Rodríguez.

“Things are changing very quickly in Venezuela. If they had captured me before I left, they would probably have disappeared me or something worse,” she said.

“At this moment, I don’t think they dare to give me due to the presence, the pressure, and the actions of the United States,” added Machado, who is currently in exile in Washington, although she has expressed her desire to return to the South American country as soon as possible.
