The rupiah has fallen again, reaching Rp17,000 per US$ on Monday (9/3) as risk-off sentiment increases in global markets.
One of the triggers is the sharp spike in world oil prices, where WTI crude oil surged about 30% to surpass US$119 per barrel.
This increase in energy prices occurs amid rising geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. One of the incidents was the reported burning of the Shahran oil depot in Iran following an attack carried out by the US-Israel.
Market uncertainty has also risen after Mojtaba Khamenei was appointed as the new supreme leader of Iran, replacing Ayatollah Ali Khamenei who was reported dead.
Mojtaba, known to be close to hardline groups, is seen to strengthen market concerns that Iran is unlikely to soften soon in its conflict with the US and Israel.
This spike in energy prices raises concerns about global inflation, which ultimately pressures the currencies of developing countries including the rupiah.

A recent report from blockchain analytics firm Chainalysis revealed that more than US$3 billion or around Rp51 trillion in cryptocurrency transactions in 2025 was related to networks associated with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
These findings were published in the 2026 Crypto Crime Report, which shows a significant spike in illegal cryptocurrency activity globally over the past year. Chainalysis noted that cryptocurrency addresses categorized as illegal received at least US$154 billion in digital assets throughout 2025.
