He later trained in Qom, Iran’s religious heart, and rose to the rank of hojjatoleslam a mid-level clerical title. It’s not the top rank, but in Iranian politics, that’s never been a dealbreaker.
What really set Mojtaba apart was his access to the center of power. For years, he was the guy everyone had to go through to reach his father. Political players, generals, clerics—they all passed through networks he ran. He built up serious influence without ever holding a formal office.
Now, all that behind-the-scenes power is out in the open.
As Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei commands the armed forces, shapes foreign policy, and has the final say on just about everything that matters. His word outweighs the president or parliament by a mile.
