Oil is not just oil: that's why the world is so interested in Iranian crude.
Many people believe that all oil is the same, but in reality it is not. The quality of crude oil silently but decisively influences global energy policy.
In the oil industry, crude oil is evaluated by API gravity, a measure that indicates how light or heavy the oil is compared to water. The higher the API number, the lighter the crude. And the lighter it is, the easier and more economical it is to refine into high-value fuels like gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel.
For example, the West Texas Intermediate (WTI) from the United States has a gravity of approximately 39–40° API, making it quite light crude. This facilitates its transportation through pipelines and allows for a high yield of refined products, which is why it is also used as a benchmark in international markets.
In contrast, Russian Urals crude is heavier, with around 31° API and higher sulfur content. Although it can be refined, it requires more treatment and additional processes, which increases costs.
On the other end is Venezuelan oil, especially that from the Orinoco Belt, which usually has an API ranging between 8 and 12. At those levels, the crude is so dense that it behaves almost like tar. To transport or refine it, it needs to be diluted or subjected to very intensive processes.
When compared to Iranian crude — particularly Iran Light, we see a significant difference. This usually has around 33–35° API, placing it in the category of moderately light crudes. It is neither excessively light nor too heavy, which for many refineries represents an ideal balance. It yields good amounts of gasoline, diesel, and petrochemical feedstocks without the high processing costs required by heavier crudes.
