The street isn't buying Kevin Warsh's so-called reset at the Fed. The reason? Kevin told the Senate yesterday that he wants to change how the Fed reads inflation, but economists say his method might create a different problem instead of solving the current one. Kevin, Donald Trump's pick for the Fed chair, told lawmakers he wants the central bank to rethink how it measures inflation. The Fed currently relies on the core PCE, which stands for Personal Consumption Expenditures Price Index. Warsh wants the Fed to strip out one-off price shocks. During his Senate hearing on Tuesday, Kevin also said, 'What interests me most is: What is the underlying inflation rate? Not: What is the one-off change in prices due to a geopolitical shift or a change in beef prices?' He then mentioned he prefers 'trimmed means,' which exclude the most extreme price readings. Kevin said, 'We eliminate all extreme risks, all unique elements, and we ask whether the broad-based price change is having second-order effects on the economy.' For now, this method makes inflation seem milder. Aditya Bhave, an economist at Bank of America, stated that a 12-month indicator using the trimmed approach would have shown an average of 2.3% and a median of 2.8% as of February. The core PCE was at 3%. During the hearing, Kevin called the inflation trend 'pretty favorable.' But Bhave warned on Wednesday that this broader regime shift at the Fed might not go in the direction Kevin wants. He said the change could bring food and energy back into policy thinking more significantly, even though those categories are currently excluded from the core PCE. Bhave added, 'Even if these shocks are removed, they could still keep the trimmed mean elevated by preventing other shocks from being trimmed.' He concluded, 'This is ironic $ETH $BNB .'
