1ST READING: Acts 16:11-15
Setting sail from Troas, we made a direct voyage to Samothrace, and the following day to Neapolis, and from there to Philippi, which is the leading city of the district of Macedonia, and a Roman colony. We remained in this city some days, and on the sabbath day, we went outside the gate to the riverside, where we supposed there was a place of prayer; and we sat down and spoke to the women who had come together. One who heard us was a woman named Lydia, from the city of Thyatira, a seller of purple goods, who was a worshiper of God. The Lord opened her heart to listen to what was said by Paul. And when she was baptized, with her household, she begged us, saying, "If you have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come to my house and stay." And she prevailed upon us.

Reflection:
Pope Francis in his Apostolic Exhortation, "The Joy of the GOSPEL" tells us that, "every Christian is challenged, here and now, to be actively engaged in evangelization." Today, Christ instructs His disciples to announce the good news, reassuring them that the Holy Spirit will support them in giving witness to that good news. Despite the difficulties and persecution that will accompany that mission, they will surely stand their ground because they have a solid foundation. When you walk in the way of Christ, honesty, sincerity, purity of life, and peace become part of you. Don't forget that the world will listen more to you if you are a living witness. The light of the Spirit will always attract. Jesus, I trust in you.

1ST READING: Acts 16:1-10

In those days: Paul came to Derbe and to Lystra. A disciple was there, named Timothy, the son of a Jewish woman who was a believer; but his father was a Greek. He was well spoken of by the brethren at Lystra and Iconium. Paul wanted Timothy to accompany him; and he took him and circumcised him because of the Jews that were in those places, for they all knew that his father was a Greek As they went on their way through the cities, they delivered to them for observance the decisions which had been reached by the apostles and elders who were at Jerusalem. So the churches were strengthened in the faith, and they increased in numbers daily. And they went through the region of Phrygia and Galatia, having been forbidden by the Holy Spirit to speak the word in Asia. And when they had come opposite Mysia, they attempted to go into Bithynia, but the Spirit of  Jesus did not allow them; so, passing by Mysia, they went down to Troas. And a vision appeared to Paul in the night: a man of Macedonia was standing pleading with him and saying, "Come over to Macedonia and help us." And when he had seen the vision, immediately we sought to go on into Macedonia, concluding that God had called us to preach the gospel to them.

Reflection:

Today  Jesus explains that following Him won't be rosy but will come with persecution, hatred and sometimes death for His true and authentic followers. Fr Christopher Magallanes faced strong persecution in his life. Arrested on his way to celebrate Mass along with Fr Caloca, he was neither accused nor tried. Led into the courtyard, they were shot to death by a firing squad. Fr Caloca's last words were, "For God we lived and for God we died." Twenty other martyrs are also commemorated today, all of whom were priests, except for three laymen who died for their parish priest. The tyrant dies and his rule is over, but the martyr dies and his rule begins! Jesus, I trust in you.

In those days: It seemed good to the apostles and the elders, with the whole Church, to choose men from among them and send them to Antioch with Paul and Barnabas. They sent Judas called Barsabbas, and Silas, leading men among the brethren, with the following letter: "The brethren, both the apostles and the elders, to the brethren who are of the Gentiles in Antioch and Syria and Cilicia, greeting. Since we have heard that some went out from us without our authorization and disturbed you, troubling your mind with what they said. So we all agreed to choose some men and send them to you with our dear friends Barnabas and Paul— ‭ men who have risked their lives for the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. We have therefore sent Judas and Silas, who themselves will tell you the same things by word of mouth. For it has seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us to lay upon you no greater burden than these necessary things: that you abstain from what has been sacrificed to idols and from blood and from what is strangled and from unchastity. If you keep yourselves from these, you will do well. Farewell." So when they were sent off, they went down to Antioch; and having gathered the congregation together, they delivered the letter. Reflection:
Howard Hendricks says, "Two things will mostly influence where you will be ten years from now: the books you read, and the friends you make." By far the most important friend you can have is the Lord Jesus. Though Jesus is the disciples' Lord and teacher, He still calls them His friends. To be a friend of Christ, we must love one another just as He loved us. We must also obey His commandments. The friends of Jesus are chosen by Him to bear fruit that lasts, as they depend upon Him through prayer. The friends of Christ are called to make their lives living Bibles. "Preach the good news always. If necessary, use words." Jesus, I trust in you.

In those days: After there had been much debate, Peter rose and said to the apostles and the elders, "Brethren, you know that in the early days God chose you, that by my mouth the Gentiles should hear the word of the gospel and believe. And God, who knows the heart, bore witness to them, giving them the Holy Spirit just as he did to us; and he made no distinction between them and us, but cleansed their hearts by faith. Now therefore, why do you make trial of God by putting a yoke upon the neck of the disciples, which neither our fathers nor we have been able to bear? But we believe that we shall be saved through the grace of the  Lord  Jesus, just as they will." And all the assembly kept silence; and they listened to Barnabas and Paul as they related what signs and wonders God had done through them among the Gentiles. After they finished speaking, James replied, "Brethren, listen to me. Simeon has related how God first visited the Gentiles, to take out of them a people for his name. And with this the words of the prophets agree, as it is written, 'After this I will return, and I will rebuild the dwelling of David, which has fallen; I will rebuild its ruins, and I will set it up, that the rest of men may seek the  Lord, and all the Gentiles who are called by my name, says the  Lord, who has made these things known from of old. Therefore, I judge that we should not trouble those of the Gentiles who turn to God, but should write to them to abstain from the pollutions of idols and from unchastity and from what is strangled and from blood. Reflection:

Though we cannot fathom the depth of the Father's love for  Jesus, yet we see this love explicitly expressed in the GOSPELs during Baptism and Transfiguration.  Jesus today says He loves us just as the Father loves Him and He expresses it so plainly on Calvary.  Jesus is therefore inviting us into a relationship of love between the Father and Himself. To receive this love, we must spend quality time with  Jesus by praying every day. We must participate in the daily Eucharistic celebration and must also feed on the word of God by reading the scripture. "Ignorance of scripture is ignorance of Christ." Jesus, I trust in you.

I. SERMON: "TAKING BACK YOUR DOMINION" -

 

1. Dominion Was God’s Original Plan 

Man was not created to be a victim — you were created to
rule. 

- Genesis 1:26: "Let us make man in our image... and
let them have dominion" 

- Psalm 8:6: "Thou madest him to have dominion over
the works of thy hands" 

You were born with a crown. Sin removed it, but Christ
restored it.

 

2. Dominion Was Lost, Then Recovered 

Adam handed dominion to Satan through disobedience Luke
4:6. But Jesus took it back. 

- Colossians 1:13: He delivered us from the power of
darkness 

- Matthew 28:18: "All power is given unto me in
heaven and in earth" 

- Luke 10:19: Now He gives that power back to you: "I
have given you authority... over all the power of the enemy"

 

3. How to Walk in Dominion Now 

- By the Word: Joshua 1:8 — This book of the law shall
not depart... then thou shalt have success 

- By Faith: 1 John 5:4 — "This is the victory that
overcometh the world, even our faith"

1. Father, I thank You for restoring my dominion through

B. Possessing Your Territory - Gen 1:28 

3. I take dominion over my life, family, business, and
health today — Deuteronomy 11:24: "Every place whereon the soles of

4. I subdue every power resisting my fruitfulness and

In those days: Jews came [to Lystra) from Antioch and Iconium; and having persuaded the people, they stoned Paul and dragged him out of the city, supposing that he was dead. But when the disciples gathered about him, he rose and entered the city; and on the next day, he went on with Barnabas to Derbe. When they had preached the gospel to that city and had made many disciples, they returned to Lystra and to Iconium and to Antioch, strengthening the souls of the disciples, exhorting them to continue in the faith, and saying that through many tribulations we must enter the kingdom of God. And when they had appointed elders for them in every church, with prayer and fasting they committed them to the  Lord in whom they believed. Then they passed through Pisidia and came to Pamphylia. And when they had spoken the word in Perga, they went down to Attalia; and from there they sailed to Antioch, where they had been commended to the grace of God for the work which they had fulfilled. Reflection:

There's no greater gift for the anxious heart than the peace of God. This peace is not escapism, avoiding trouble, refusing to face things, or denying problems. This peace doesn't come through pleasure. "The flesh will make you hungry where it satisfies you most." It is the King of peace who assures us of security, covering, and protection even in the midst of storms. It is a peace that keeps our hearts at rest even in the midst of the troubles, persecutions, and problems of life. Today,  Jesus assures us that He is with us. No matter how turbulent your life is presently, just put your hand into the hand of God. Jesus, I trust in you.

1ST READING: Acts 14:5-18

In those days: When an attempt was made by both Gentiles and Jews, with their rulers, to molest Paul and Barnabas and to stone them, they learned of it and fled to Lystra and Derbe, cities of Lycaonia, and to the surrounding country; and there they preached the gospel. Now at Lystra there was a man sitting, who could not use his feet; he was a cripple from birth, who had never walked. He listened to Paul speaking; and Paul, looking intently at him and seeing that he had faith to be made well, said in a loud voice, "Stand upright on your feet." And he sprang up and walked. And when the crowds saw what Paul had done, they lifted their voices, saying in Lycaonian, "The gods have come down to us in the likeness of men!" Barnabas they called Zeus, and Paul, because he was the chief speaker, they called Hermes. And the priest of Zeus, whose temple was in front of the city, brought oxen and garlands to the gates and wanted to offer a sacrifice with the people. But when the apostles Barnabas and Paul heard of it, they tore their garments and rushed out among the multitude, crying, "Men, why are you doing this? We also are men, of like nature with you, and bring you good news, that you should turn from these vain things to a living God who made the heaven and the earth and the sea and all that is in them. In past generations he allowed all the nations to walk in their own ways; yet he did not leave himself without witness, for he did good and gave you from heaven rains and fruitful seasons, satisfying your hearts with food and gladness." With these words, they scarcely restrained the people from offering sacrifice to them.

He who does not love me does not keep my words; and the word which you hear is not mine but the Father's who sent me. "These things I have spoken to you, while I am still with you. But the Counsellor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.

Reflection:

Angels fly, not because they have six wings, but because they obey. 1 Sam 15:22 says, "Obedience is better than sacrifice." It takes love to obey. St Augustine would say, "Love God and do what you want." Loving  Jesus is not the same as keeping His commandments. It precedes and gives rise to keeping the commandments. Whoever loves God obeys His teaching. It's that simple. So, we are called to go back to our identity with Christ to remind ourselves of who we are, to whom we belong, and who is within us, and we will immediately find love, motivation, and power to obediently love God and love our neighbours. Jesus, I trust in you.

          

EASTER WEEK 4 SATURDAY

1ST READING: Acts 13:44-52

The next sabbath almost the whole city gathered together to hear the word of God. But when the Jews saw the multitudes, they were filled with jealousy, and contradicted what was spoken by Paul, and reviled him. And Paul and Barnabas spoke out boldly, saying, "It was necessary that the word of God should be spoken first to you. Since you thrust it from you, and judge yourselves unworthy of eternal life, behold, we turn to the Gentiles. For so the  Lord has commanded us, saying, 'i have set you to be a light for the Gentiles, that you may bring salvation to the uttermost parts of the earth." And when the Gentiles heard this, they were glad and glorified the word of God; and as many as were ordained to eternal life believed. And the word of the  Lord spread throughout all the region. But the Jews incited the devout women of high standing and the leading men of the city, and stirred up persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and drove them out of their district. But they shook off the dust from their feet against them, and went to Iconium. And the disciples were filled with joy and with the Holy Spirit.

Reflection:

When many Jews at Antioch in Pisidia refuse to accept the Good News, Paul and Barnabas decide to preach to the Gentiles (cf. Acts 13:44-46). Providentially, their decision yields a great result: "When the Gentiles heard this, they were glad and praised the word of the  Lord; and as many as had been destined for eternal life became believers" (Acts 13:48). Similarly, when a door of opportunity in life is closed, let us look out for another door that the  Lord opens for us. Paul and Barnabas do not waste any more effort on those who refuse the message of salvation. Similarly, then, let us not waste our efforts on doors of opportunity that have been closed. Jesus, I trust in you.

In those days: [When Paul came to Antioch of Pisidia, he said in the synagogue,] "Brethren, sons of the family of Abraham, and those among you that fear God, to us has been sent the message of this salvation. For those who live in Jerusalem and their rulers, because they did not recognize him nor understand the utterances of the prophets which are read every sabbath, fulfilled these by condemning him. Reflection:

Difficulty, sickness, loss of job, unemployment, childlessness, marital difficulties, etc., might trouble us. Sometimes we eventually overcome such difficulties. There is, however, one that none of us can defeat. That is death. We should, however, not despair. Our hearts should not be troubled (cf. Jn 14:1), for there is good news for us all. It is that the almighty God has raised His Son,  Jesus Christ, from death (cf. Acts 13:30). By the death and resurrection of  Jesus, God is offering us eternal life. Furthermore, God, who has power over death, has power over all our other problems. Let us therefore always trust in Him and trust in His Son (cf. Jn 14:1). Jesus, I trust in you.

Reflection:

Life without  Jesus is no life! Everything becomes dark, dreadful, and stormy. The crisis today is the unflinching attempt to evict Christ from the rocking boat of our existence. The plethora of catastrophes is indicative of the continual attempts to relegate  Jesus to the background. The more we insist on rejecting Him and His ways, the more we sink into frustration. Our lives will be characterised by emptiness, unhappiness, illness, and varying degrees of misery. In  Jesus alone can we attain our life's purpose. He is the Author of all things and wields absolute power over nature and the world. He is the true peace and joy-giver. His presence calms every fear, anxiety, turbulence, and depression. We must accept Him to fill our lives with happiness. Jesus, I trust in you.

1ST READING: Acts 12:24-13:5

In those days: The word of God grew and multiplied. And Barnabas and Saul returned from Jerusalem when they had fulfilled their mission, bringing with them John whose other name was Mark. Now in the church at Antioch there were prophets and teachers, Barnabas, Simeon who was called Niger, Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen a member of the court of Herod the tetrarch, and Saul. While they were worshiping the  Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, "Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them." Then after fasting and praying they laid their hands on them and sent them off. So, being sent out by the Holy Spirit, they went down to Seleucia; and from there they sailed to Cyprus. When they arrived at Salamis, they proclaimed the word of God in the synagogues of the Jews.

Reflection:

The words of the Popes:

Jesus promised he would give everyone “rest”, but on one condition: “Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and lowly in heart”. What is this “yoke” which lightens instead of burdening, which instead of oppressing, uplifts? The “yoke” of Christ is the law of love, it is his commandment which he bequeathed to his disciples (cf. Jn 13:34; 15:12). The true remedy for humanity's wounds, both material — such as hunger and injustice in all its forms — and psychological and moral, caused by a false well-being, is a rule of life based on fraternal love, whose source is in the love of God. For this reason it is necessary to abandon the way of arrogance, of violence used to obtain ever more powerful positions, to assure oneself of success at any price. It is also necessary to give up the aggressive attitude with regard to the environment which has prevailed in recent centuries and to adopt a reasonable “gentleness”. However, in human, interpersonal and social relations above all, the rule of respect and of non-violence, namely, the power of the truth against every kind of abuse is what can assure a future worthy of the human being. Jesus, I trust in you.

The words of the Popes:

The task which Jesus entrusts to a small group of common men lacking great intellectual capacity seems truly too bold! Yet this small company, insignificant compared to the great powers of the world, is sent to bring the message of Jesus’ love and mercy to every corner of the earth. But this plan of God can be accomplished only with the strength that God himself grants to the Apostles. (…) This is how this mission was able to be accomplished, and the Apostles began this work which was then continued by their successors. The mission that Jesus entrusted to the Apostles has continued through the centuries, and continues still today: it requires the cooperation of all of us. Each one, in fact, by the power of the Baptism that he or she received, is qualified in turn to proclaim the Gospel. (…) On this journey, we encounter Christ himself in our brothers and sisters, especially in the poorest, in those who suffer in their very flesh the harsh and humiliating experience of old and new forms of poverty. As at the beginning the Risen Christ sent his Apostles with the power of the Holy Spirit, so too does he send all of us today, with the same power, to establish concrete and visible signs of hope. 1ST READING: Acts 9:1-20

In those days: Saul, still breathing threats and murder against the disciples of the  Lord, went to the high priest and asked him for letters to the synagogues at Damascus, so that if he found any belonging to the Way, men or women, he might bring them bound to Jerusalem. Now, as he journeyed, he approached Damascus, and suddenly a light from heaven flashed about him. And he fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to him, "Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?" And he said, "Who are you,  Lord?" And he said, "I am  Jesus, whom you are persecuting; but rise and enter the city, and you will be told what you are to do." The men who were travelling with him stood speechless, hearing the voice but seeing no one. Saul arose from the ground; and when his eyes were opened, he could see nothing; so they led him by the hand and brought him into Damascus. And for three days he was without sight, and neither ate nor drank. Now there was a disciple at Damascus named Ananias. The  Lord said to him in a vision, "Ananias." And he said, "Here I am,  Lord." And the  Lord said to him, "Rise and go to the street called Straight, and inquire in the house of Judas for a man of Tarsus named Saul; for behold, he is praying, and he has seen a man named Ananias come in and lay his hands on him so that he might regain his sight." But Ananias answered, " Lord, I have heard from many about this man, how much evil he has done to your saints at Jerusalem; and here he has authority from the chief priests to bind all who call upon your name." But the  Lord said to him, "Go, for he is a chosen instrument of mine to carry my name before the Gentiles and kings and the sons of Israel; for I will show him how much he must suffer for the sake of my name." So Ananias departed and entered the house. And laying his hands on him he said, "Brother Saul, the  Lord  Jesus who appeared to you on the road by which you came, has sent me that you may regain your sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit." And immediately something like scales fell from his eyes and he regained his sight. Then he rose and was baptized, and took food and was strengthened. For several days he was with the disciples at Damascus. And in the synagogues immediately he proclaimed  Jesus, saying, "He is the Son of God."

As the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so he who eats me will live because of me. This is the bread which came down from heaven, not such as the fathers ate and died; he who eats this bread will live for ever." This he said in the synagogue, as he taught at Capernaum.

Reflection:

Today we read the story of Paul's conversion. Paul, a staunch and dynamic believer,  spent his youthful energy defending his Jewish religion. The risen  Jesus reveals Himself to him and henceforth he will redirect his youthful zeal for spreading the GOSPEL. Paul's eyes are open but he cannot see. When the light of the GOSPEL impacts us, we become blind to our former ways of seeing, and acquire new GOSPEL eyes for seeing. We always need others to guide us in this. Paul needed Ananias. In the GOSPEL  Jesus tells us we need to draw eternal life from Him through the Eucharist, as He Himself draws life from God through His intimate, 'bosom' relationship with God (John 1:18). Jesus, I trust in you.

1ST READING: Acts 8:26-40

In those days: An angel of the  Lord said to Philip, "Rise and go toward the south to the road that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza." This is a desert road. And he rose and went. And behold, an Ethiopian, a eunuch, a minister of the Candace, queen of the Ethiopians, in charge of all her treasure, had come to Jerusalem to worship and was returning; seated in his chariot, he was reading the prophet, Isaiah. And the Spirit said to Philip, "Go up and join this chariot." So Philip ran to him, and heard him reading Isaiah the prophet, and asked, "Do you understand what you are reading?" And he said, "How can I, unless someone guides me?" And he invited Philip to come up and sit with him. Now the passage of the scripture which he was reading was this: "As a sheep led to the slaughter or a lamb before its shearer is dumb, so he opened not his mouth. In his humiliation, justice was denied him. Who can describe his generation? For his life is taken up from the earth." And the eunuch said to Philip, "About whom, pray, does the prophet say this, about himself or about someone else?" Then Philip opened his mouth, and beginning with this scripture he told him the good news of  Jesus. And as they went along the road they came to some water, and the eunuch said, "See, here is water! What is to prevent my being baptized?" And he commanded the chariot to stop, and they both went down into the water, Philip and the eunuch, and he baptized him. And when they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the  Lord caught up Philip; and the eunuch saw him no more, and went on his way rejoicing. But Philip was found at Azotus, and passing on he preached the gospel to all the towns till he came to Caesarea.

Reflection:

The Holy Spirit directs the early Christians' mission in Jerusalem, then in Samaria, and now to an African, a minister of an Ethiopian Queen. He is reading the scriptures on the way home from Jerusalem after his pilgrimage. The Holy Spirit who inspired his reading also inspires Philip to explain the reading to the Ethiopian, who listens, accepts the explanation, and is baptized. In the GOSPEL,  Jesus repeats He is the Bread of Life. This truth can only be accepted by people who come to God, listen to Him, learn, and receive this bread of life in faith. We, too, are invited to seek a proper understanding of the Bible; to live by what we have understood. Jesus, I trust in you.

Devout men buried Stephen, and made great lamentation over him. But Saul was ravaging the church, and entering house after house, he dragged off men and women and committed them to prison. Now those who were scattered went about preaching the word. Philip went down to a city of Samaria, and proclaimed to them the Christ. And the multitudes with one accord gave heed to what was said by Philip, when they heard him and saw the signs which he did. For unclean spirits came out of many who were possessed, crying with a loud voice; and many who were paralyzed or lame were healed. So there was much joy in that city.

Reflection:
God writes straight on crooked lines." Stephen's martyrdom and subsequent persecution force the disciples to move outside Jerusalem. As Jesus has commissioned them, they begin to proclaim the GOSPEL widely. Philip, one of the seven, makes a breakthrough in Samaria. Our baptism mandates us to proclaim the GOSPEL. If we think we are too insignificant to do this we diminish ourselves; we doubt the power of the Holy Spirit to work in and through us. In the GOSPEL Jesus continues to teach people the difference between ordinary bread, however miraculous it may seem, and Himself, God's bread from heaven for eternal life. To receive this we need faith, not money. Jesus, I trust in you.

In those days: Stephen, full of grace and power, did great wonders and signs among the people. Then some of those who belonged to the synagogue of the Freedmen (as it was called), and of the Cyrenians, and of the Alexandrians, and of those from Cilicia and Asia, arose and disputed with Stephen. But they could not withstand the wisdom and the Spirit with which he spoke. Then they secretly instigated men, who said, "We have heard him speak blasphemous words against Moses and God." And they stirred up the people and the elders and the scribes, and they came upon him and seized him and brought him before the council, and set up false witnesses who said, "This man never ceases to speak words against this holy place and the law; for we have heard him say that this  Jesus of Nazareth will destroy this place, and will change the customs which Moses delivered to us." And gazing at him, all who sat in the council saw that his face was like the face of an angel.

GOSPEL John 6:22-29

[After five thousand men had eaten their fill, the disciples of  Jesus saw him walking on the sea.] On the next day the people who remained on the other side of the sea saw that there had been only one boat there, and that  Jesus had not entered the boat with his disciples, but that his disciples had gone away alone. However, boats from Tiberias came near the place where they ate the bread after the  Lord had given thanks. So when the people saw that  Jesus was not there, nor his disciples, they themselves got into the boats and went to Capernaum, seeking  Jesus. When they found him on the other side of the sea, they said to him, "Rabbi, when did you come here?"  Jesus answered them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, you seek me, not because you saw signs, but because you have eaten your fill of the loaves. Do not labour for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to eternal life, which the Son of man will give to you; for on him has God the Father set his seal." Then they said to him, "What must we do, to be doing the works of God?"  Jesus answered them, "This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent."

Reflection:

Christ rightly points out that man does not live by bread alone but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God (Mt 4:4). While mortal men live on bread alone, immortal men live on both bread and the word but they are more delighted in the word because the word is for spiritual nourishment and man is a spiritual being. Today's GOSPEL reading teaches us that while we seek to make a living by seeking to satisfy our physical and material hunger, we must also seek to satisfy our hunger for spiritual food. "He has made us for Himself and our souls are restless until they rest in Him." Jesus, I trust in you.
