The case, brought forward by an anonymous plaintiff known as Noah Doe along with two companies, attempts to claim ownership of these wallets under a “lost property” legal framework. However, the court’s decision to halt proceedings signals that the issue is far from straightforward. At the center of the dispute is whether traditional lost-and-found laws can even apply to digital assets. A legal challenge led by attorney Ian R. Cohen argues that such laws were designed for physical property, not blockchain-based assets. Since Bitcoin exists on a transparent and traceable ledger, the argument is that these funds were never truly “lost,” but rather remain securely held—even if inactive for years.
