PRESIDENT TRUMP SENDS SPECIAL ENVOY TO PAKISTAN TO DISCUSS IRAN
US President Donald Trump has dispatched Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and his son-in-law Jared Kushner to Pakistan for peace talks with Iran on April 25.
"Iran is looking to negotiate," White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated, adding that the US president is "always ready to give diplomacy a shot," and that Vice President JD Vance is "set to go" if the talks yield positive results.
Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baqaei mentioned that he and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi arrived in Islamabad on the evening of April 24, and Araghchi only plans to meet with "senior officials of Pakistan" to "discuss bilateral issues" and regional developments.
"No meetings are scheduled between Iran and the US. Iran's viewpoints will be communicated to Pakistan,” Baqaei said.
Prior to this statement from Iran, US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth noted that Tehran has a chance to secure a "good deal," emphasizing that "all they need to do is genuinely and verifiably abandon nuclear weapons."
At a press conference on April 24, Hegseth also warned that Washington's continued blockade of the Strait of Hormuz - a crucial oil transport route - is "increasing and spreading globally."
