এক বৃদ্ধার বাড়িতে একদিন বাদশাহর পোষা একটি বাজ পাখি উড়ে এসে পড়ল। বৃদ্ধা পাখিটিকে ধরে মায়া ভরে বলতে লাগল,
“আহা! বাদশাহর বিলাসিতায় তোর এই দুর্দশা হয়েছে। এতদিন খাঁচায় আটকে রেখেছিল, তাই নখগুলো কত বড় হয়ে গেছে!”
এ কথা বলে সে পাখিটির সব নখ গোড়া থেকে কেটে দিল।
তারপর পাখিটির ঠোঁটের দিকে তাকিয়ে আবার বলল,
“ইস! ঠোঁটটাও কেমন বেঁকে গেছে। আয়, তোকে ঠিক করে দিই।”
এবার সে ছুরি দিয়ে ঠোঁটের বাকা অংশ কেটে একেবারে সোজা করে দিল।
ফলাফল?
বাজ পাখিটি আর কোনোদিন শিকার ধরতে পারবে না।
না পারবে নখ দিয়ে আঘাত করতে, না পারবে ঠোঁট দিয়ে খাবার ছিঁড়ে খেতে।
অজ্ঞতার কারণে “উপকার” করতে গিয়ে বৃদ্ধা আসলে পাখিটিকে সারা জীবনের জন্য পঙ্গু করে দিল।
