I was rebalancing some old staking positions recently and had that same annoying thought again.

DeFi keeps telling us capital is “working,” but half the time it is just locked somewhere, collecting rewards, unable to do anything else.

traditional staking is the easiest version to understand. you secure a network, you earn yield, and the asset sits there. that is not useless. security matters. but it also creates sleeping capital. locked capital is secure capital, but not always productive capital.

Lido changed the first layer of that problem. stETH made staking liquid, so users could keep staking exposure while still moving through DeFi. that was a real unlock. but liquidity by itself is not productivity. a car with fuel still needs roads, destinations, and reasons to move.

EigenLayer pushed the next question with restaking. security became reusable. one asset could support multiple services. that idea changed how people think about collateral. but restaking alone does not magically solve cross-asset efficiency, liquidity mobility, or the risk of stacking too many claims on the same capital.

that is why Bedrock is interesting to examine.

not as another yield box, but as an attempt to make assets perform more functions at once. liquid restaking, productive collateral, multi-layer utility, yield optimization — the point is not just “how much can this earn?”

it is “how many jobs can this capital do?”

yield is easy to manufacture. utility is harder.

an asset that only earns is useful. an asset that earns, secures, and moves is infrastructure.

maybe DeFi’s next serious race is not higher APYs.

maybe it is capital efficiency.
