The first time someone explained a game economy to me using “sinks and faucets,” I honestly thought it sounded unnecessarily complicated.
It’s not.
If anything, it’s the simplest way to understand why most Web3 game economies don’t last.
Faucets are all the ways value enters the system—rewards from quests, crops you can sell, tokens you earn from playing. Sinks are all the ways value leaves—upgrades, crafting, taxes, burns. You need both. Too many faucets and everything inflates into meaninglessness. Too many sinks and players feel like they’re constantly losing, so they stop playing.
What makes it tricky is that this balance doesn’t stay fixed. It shifts constantly depending on how many players are active and what’s happening with the token price. You can’t just “set it and forget it.”
Pixels, to its credit, clearly understands this. The economy isn’t just a reward machine. PIXEL comes in through gameplay, and it goes back out through upgrades, crafting, and burns. Same idea applies to resources. That already puts it ahead of a lot of projects that only thought about sinks after inflation became a problem.
But understanding the system and tuning it properly are two very different things.
And this is where I’m not fully convinced yet.
The player base has gone through pretty big swings. During the points campaign, there were a lot of players, and the economy had enough activity on both sides—people earning and people spending. After the token launch, some of that crowd left. That changes everything. Fewer players means fewer rewards being generated—but also fewer people spending. The balance might still work… or it might not. Without real data, it’s hard to say.
Then there’s land, which adds another layer.
Landowners earn from other players using their plots. That’s great if you own land. If you don’t, part of what you earn is always going to someone else. So you end up with two very different experiences inside the same game. In a way, it mirrors real-world systems more than most games do—which is either interesting or uncomfortable, depending on how you look at it.
Seasonal events are one thing I think Pixels does well. They act like temporary drains on the economy—people spend more during high-engagement periods without permanently changing the system. It’s a proven idea from traditional games. The only concern is if those events start carrying too much weight, like they’re compensating for problems in the core economy.
The reality is no game gets this right immediately. It’s always a process of adjusting and reacting.
What matters is whether the team is paying attention and willing to make changes. Pixels has shown some of that. Moving to Ronin, for example, wasn’t just technical—it made transactions cheaper and easier, which directly affects how often players engage with sinks.
That kind of flexibility matters.
At the end of the day, though, Pixels is dealing with the same core problem every play-to-earn game faces.
Some players are there to earn. They want more coming in than going out.
Others are there to play. They want spending to feel meaningful.
Those two things don’t naturally align.
No one has really solved that yet.
Pixels might not have the answer either—but at least it feels like they’re actually trying to figure it out
