In my experience, ETFs were a better starting point because they gave me diversification without having to research dozens of companies. After I became more comfortable reading financial reports and understanding different sectors, I started adding individual stocks. ETFs helped reduce my risk while I was still learning, and I still keep a large portion of my portfolio in them for long-term investing.

From my experience, relying only on news can be risky because the market often reacts before retail investors see the headlines. What helped me was focusing more on fundamentals like revenue growth, profitability, and whether the company has a strong competitive advantage. For long-term investments, I ask myself if I would still be confident holding the stock 3–5 years from now. If the main reason to buy is short-term excitement or a trending story, I treat it as a trade rather than an investment.
