Every mature network eventually discovers that coordination is more expensive than computation. Running code is easy; aligning independent actors around the consequences of that code is where complexity accumulates.

That observation feels increasingly relevant as autonomous agents become long-lived participants rather than isolated applications. The challenge is no longer building a model that can execute a strategy. It is creating an environment where thousands of independently developed agents can coexist without requiring bilateral trust, while still leaving room for experimentation and disagreement.

Newton Protocol ($NEWT ) is interesting through that lens. A secure rollup for AI-driven strategies is fundamentally an attempt to standardize the coordination layer instead of the strategies themselves. Shared execution rules can reduce operational friction and make interactions more predictable, but they also create new questions. Which assumptions belong in protocol logic, and which should remain the responsibility of individual agents? Every rule embedded into infrastructure improves consistency while narrowing the range of behaviors the system naturally permits.

Protocol design has always involved deciding what to make impossible, not just what to make efficient. As autonomous software becomes a first-class economic actor, those decisions become governance choices as much as engineering ones.

The unresolved issue is whether resilient ecosystems emerge from increasingly standardized coordination, or from preserving enough architectural diversity that no single design assumption becomes a systemic dependency.
