The defining move was a native Real World Asset module built around permissioning, not just token creation. It lets issuers define who can interact with a particular asset through allow lists and compliant access points, while keeping the base network open for everything else. Volan explicitly frames this as a path to launch assets like tokenized fiat pairs, treasury bills, and credit-style products through compliant gateways, which is hard to do if every asset must be universally accessible from the start.
The rest of Volan reads like the checklist you end up with when you try to make a trading system feel like infrastructure instead of an app. @Injective expanded IBC so other Cosmos chains can interact directly with its financial modules, including the onchain orderbook, which makes cross-chain routing less of a scavenger hunt across bridges and interfaces. It introduced enterprise APIs aimed at reducing latency, described as cuts of up to 90% by enabling a path to post transactions without depending on indexers. It also expanded burn capabilities, including the ability for projects to burn bank tokens created on Injective.
Then came the most user-visible lever: gas. In January 2024, Injective’s gas compression update made transactions dramatically cheaper around 0.00001 INJ each, roughly $0.0003 at the time and the suggested gas setting dropped from 500000000inj to 160000000inj. When fees fall that low, the chain stops charging users for hesitation. Instead of earning more of what you put in, you were being handed slices of a partnership network. That’s not neutral yield. It’s curated exposure, and curation is judgment.

This is why “DeFi in name, judgment in practice” isn’t a cheap critique. Smart contracts can enforce lockups, proportional payouts, and withdrawal rules. A time-bounded vault can align rewards with a real moment: a partner release window, a subDAO push, a quest cadence. Seen that way, a vault is less a savings product and more a coordination tool.
But discretion is also the risk surface. Badge gating is permissioning, even if the badge is an NFT. Partner-token rewards mean you inherit partner risk, and that risk doesn’t show up neatly in audits. Tokens can lose liquidity. Games can stall. Communities can move on. The contract might still do exactly what it promised, while the value of what it distributed collapses, and users will still feel burned.
