🚀 2 million $ in
$ETH unlocked after 10 years...
but are the owners even aware? 👀
This is today's wild story, and it shows that in crypto, anything is possible — even the impossible!
A "White Hat" hacker (an ethical hacker, on the good side) known as 0xflorent has just pulled off a feat: unlocking 1,003 ETH (over 2 million dollars) stuck in a faulty old smart contract since 2016.
❌ What's the story?
Back in 2016, a project called Hong Coin held a fundraising round (ICO).
The project flopped, and the system was supposed to automatically refund the 48 investors.
Problem: a software bug froze everything. For 10 years, the funds remained locked, untouchable.
🛠️ The rescue (No jail, no theft!)
0xflorent didn’t steal this money and didn’t end up arrested by the cops.
On the contrary, he worked hand in hand with the project's creators.
By exploiting a mathematical flaw in the old code from back then, he managed to "force" the digital vault to activate the refunds.
Result: the money didn’t go into the hacker's pocket, but went directly back to the wallets of the 48 original investors!
(A big investor has already recovered 96 ETH).
🧐 The real issue today:
Investors "in the cloud"
This is where it gets crazy.
Ten years in crypto is an eternity. Many of these 48 investors have probably:
Moved on.
Lost their private keys.
Or have absolutely no clue about what just happened, completely disconnected from crypto news!
Imagine one morning, you open an old forgotten crypto wallet and find tens of thousands of dollars from 2016...
Moral of the story:
Never throw away your old private keys, you never know which big-hearted hacker will come to fix the past! 🛡️
