The programmer with only two attempts 👀👇
Stefan Thomas, a German coder living in San Francisco, received 7,002 Bitcoins back in 2011 as payment for creating an explainer video on how cryptocurrency works. At that time, each unit was worth just a few bucks. Thomas stored the private keys to his wallet on an IronKey, an ultra-secure hard drive that encrypts its contents and is designed to self-destruct if the wrong password is entered ten times.
Years later, when Bitcoin's price skyrocketed, Thomas realized he had lost the note where he wrote down the password for the device. To date, he has used up eight of the allowed ten attempts unsuccessfully. The agony of knowing he has hundreds of millions of dollars within reach, but locked behind an unbreakable digital wall, has led to sleepless nights and deep despair. Currently, the IronKey remains in a secure location, waiting for decryption technology to advance, with only two chances left before the funds are wiped forever.
